ACT ceases engagement in Myanmar

15.12.2021

Myanmar has been an ACT priority country since 2018. In December 2021, members took the difficult decision to cease ACT’s operations in Myanmar. This is a consequence of the withdrawal of IndustriALL’s local trade union affiliate IWFM from the ACT operations, because they are no longer able to operate freely under the current circumstances. ACT will evaluate its potential future engagement if the situation in the country changes.

Overview on past projects

Myanmar Freedom of Association (FOA) Guideline and Framework Dispute Resolution Mechanism: In 2019 and 2020, the Industrial Workers’ Federation of Myanmar (IWFM) and an Employer Working group of ACT brand suppliers negotiated and agreed on the Myanmar FOA Guideline and a Framework Dispute Resolution Mechanism (DRM) over the implementation of the FOA Guideline.

Fast-Track Dispute Resolution: From March to October 2021 ACT operated a Fast-Track Dispute Resolution Mechanism on respect of workers’ rights in Myanmar.
